From day one at carafem, we set out to do something different. Founded in 2013, carafem was created to be a nimble, innovative abortion provider who centers our clients in everything we do. From visiting our website to coming to a brick-and-mortar location or accessing care via telehealth, carafem empowers people to make decisions and choices that are best for them, without an ounce of judgment — just easy to understand information and high quality care.

carafem is here to serve anyone and everyone in need of an abortion.

Abortion is a common form of healthcare and carafem believes it should be treated like any other medical experience. Abortion stigma is also real, and pervasive, so carafem is committed to fighting it by using the word abortion, frequently, and at normal talking levels. To help reinforce that abortion is normal, carafem unapologetically uses the word in all of our communications, both marketing and otherwise, to help smash stigma and start a conversation. We have done this from day one and will continue to do so, including in our latest video.

We created this video as a way to quickly and easily show who we are and what services carafem provides. Within the first 5 seconds of the video, we proudly state that carafem is an expert in abortion care. It’s the most important message so we wanted to lead with it. From abortion to birth control to STI testing and treatment, carafem can help.

Cara, and carafem, are here for you

The video also highlights “Cara”, our text-based virtual assistant who accompanies all clients in their abortion care. Named a top three advancement in femtech by Fast Company in 2023, Cara was created to help guide clients through their medication abortion. The most commonly used medication abortion regimen consists of two medications, each taken different ways, at different times, and have different side effects. Cara works in partnership with clients to create their personalized plan based around their schedules, then follows up with instructions, checking in with clients every step of the way, all the way through to their negative pregnancy.

Since Cara first launched in 2019, carafem’s medical team has cataloged tens of thousands of questions we’ve received from clients and created customized, compassionate, medically accurate responses for Cara. To date, Cara has exchanged over 1.2 million messages, helping people through their care in the middle of the night, on weekends, and every single holiday. If Cara is ever unable to fully answer a question or if further medical support is needed, clients are seamlessly connected with a member of their care team.

Cara Is Not Your Cable Company’s Chatbot

Most importantly, carafem’s clients love Cara. Many of them forget she’s not a real person, such as this client who refers to Cara as a nurse in their Google review:

Affordable at home abortion care

Finally, increasing access to abortion is why carafem was created so we partner with numerous abortion funds, both national and local, to offer financial assistance and accept insurance for in-person appointments and video visits in select states to help make this care more accessible for our clients. By doing so, the cost for an at home abortion ranges from $0 to $225 depending on need. We transparently share our pricing for both online and in-person care — something that’s hard to find in most medical experiences.

carafem. Here for you. Always.

To close out the video, we wanted to leave the viewers with this important message; carafem will be there for you. Always. It is our goal to ensure every client feels supported through all stages of their at home abortion experience.

carafem’s Victory Against Anti-Abortion Extremists in Tennessee https://carafem.org/tennessee-victory/ Tue, 06 Feb 2024 17:44:26 +0000 https://carafem.org/?p=14373

When we opened a carafem health center in the Nashville suburb of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee in February 2019, we anticipated challenges. Just two days after opening, city leaders convened to discuss an ordinance that would have forced us to close and relocate our office. Within those same two days of opening, our appointment schedule for the entire month filled with local residents seeking abortion care, highlighting the pressing need for this care in the community. This situation revealed two distinct truths: local politicians were determined to impede our work, while the community resolutely demonstrated their need for and reliance on our services.

Despite current legal restrictions on medically supervised abortion care within Tennessee, carafem has persevered. We are pleased to announce a recent victory: six anti-abortion extremists were convicted of felony conspiracy charges last week. This conviction stemmed from their actions of physically blocking the door to our office in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee on March 5, 2021.

Three years ago, this group of anti-abortion extremists unlawfully entered the medical building housing carafem’s Mt. Juliet Health Center and physically blocked our clinic doors. Some clients with appointments were unable to access our office due to the blockade. However, with the safety of our clients and staff always being our top priority, we were able to delay seeing most of our clients until the individuals trespassing and intimidating our clients and staff were removed. That morning, local law enforcement was able to remove an estimated 25-35 protestors from our otherwise quiet medical plaza, resulting in 11 eventual arrests.

The trial against six of these anti-abortion extremists concluded last week with a decisive victory for carafem and all abortion care providers. A federal jury unanimously found all six trespassers guilty of violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, which safeguards patients’ right to access reproductive health centers. Sentencing is scheduled for July, with the convicted extremists facing up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $260,000.

Melissa Grant, carafem’s Chief Operations Officer, emphasized the organization’s unwavering commitment to the safety and security of clients and staff. Grant provided this statement after our victory:

“The intentional blockade of our carafem health center in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee was a premeditated act of trespass, aimed at obstructing our clients from accessing and our staff from providing essential healthcare services… We are gratified to witness justice being served.”

People who need abortions deserve high-quality, accessible, compassionate, and comprehensive medical care provided in their own communities. Abortion is a common experience for at least 1 in 4 people who can become pregnant. Abortion seekers are the experts in their own reproductive health experiences and should have the support to make the best decision for their lives, their futures, and for their families.

But this legal victory serves as a strong message to those who seek to restrict access to safe and legal abortions. It reaffirms that abortion care providers and patients deserve fair and protected access to vital reproductive healthcare, regardless of the political opinions of those who disagree.

carafem proudly provides high quality abortion care as part of more comprehensive reproductive health care in 17 states. We center the needs of our clients in everything we do. Whether people want to access care online, through video appointments, or in a health center, carafem strives to provide abortion care when and how people want it. We are incredibly grateful for our dedicated staff, excellent legal advocates, and the support of the people in the communities we serve.

While we are grateful for this legal win, we know our work is far from over. carafem remains steadfast in our commitment to continuing to expand access to high quality, compassionate abortion care in communities across our country.

To help sustain our vital work, please consider donating to carafem. Your support will help us continue providing high quality, compassionate abortion and reproductive health care.

As always, if you or someone you know needs sexual or reproductive health care, give us a call at 1-855-SAY-CARA or access care online.

carafem Statement on Guilty Verdict in Federal FACE Act https://carafem.org/carafem-statement-on-guilty-verdict-in-federal-face-act/ Wed, 31 Jan 2024 00:11:04 +0000 https://carafem.org/?p=14337 Nashville, Tennessee – In response to the guilty verdict for six defendants found guilty today of violating the federal Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act at carafem’s Mt. Juliet, Tennessee Health Center, Melissa Grant, Chief Operating Officer of carafem, released the following statement:

“The safety and security of carafem clients and staff remain our utmost priority. The intentional blockade of our carafem health center in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, in March 2021 was a premeditated act of trespass, aimed at obstructing our clients from accessing and our staff from providing essential healthcare services. It serves as an unfortunate illustration of leveraging personal agendas to justify impeding our small business from operating. This verdict is a crucial step in delineating boundaries to safeguard small businesses from unwarranted intrusion by those driven by politically motivated grievances against us. We are gratified to witness justice being served.”

51 Ways carafem is Expanding Abortion Access Post-Roe https://carafem.org/roe-51/ Mon, 22 Jan 2024 03:45:57 +0000 https://carafem.org/?p=14223

In January, we celebrate the 51 years of Roe v. Wade, a landmark case that secured federal protections for abortion in the US and symbolized abortion access for nearly 5 decades. However, in June of 2022, the Supreme Court dealt a blow to this legacy with the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, overturning Roe v. Wade. The removal of federal abortion protections has led to an onslaught of restrictive state laws, effectively banning, or significantly impeding access to abortion. Anti-abortion extremists have relentlessly sought to limit abortion access, resulting in 14 states implementing near-total abortion bans, affecting more than 20 million people. The consequences of the Dobbs v. Jackson decision are profound and will resonate for years.

The notion that “Roe was the floor, not the ceiling” urges us to envision a future where reproductive freedom and universal abortion access prevail. Even during Roe v. Wade’s existence, numerous barriers hindered abortion care accessibility –  restrictive state laws, geographic constraints, criminalization of abortion seekers, financial burdens, and stigmatization. These obstacles disproportionately affected  Black, Indigenous, People of Color, disabled individuals, low-income individuals, LGBTQ+ individuals, and undocumented individuals.

Those seeking abortions deserve more, and our communities deserve more than what Roe v. Wade provided. carafem is committed to delivering beyond expectations. We are dedicated to offering compassionate, high-quality, specialized, and accessible abortion and reproductive health care for everyone.

In the face of Roe v. Wade’s overturning, carafem is reaffirming our commitment to providing compassionate, high-quality abortion care. We are expanding and revolutionizing our care. 8 Things Abortion is More Popular Than: Fall Edition https://carafem.org/abortion-popularity-part-2/ Tue, 12 Sep 2023 19:40:04 +0000 https://carafem.org/?p=13467

Abortion is incredibly common and widely supported in the United States—according to a Gallup poll, 85% of Americans believe abortion should be legal in certain or any circumstances. Earlier this year, the carafem team put together a list of things that abortion has a higher approval rating than. From the U.S. government, to Dolly Parton, to Pineapple on Pizza, the list goes on! Abortion is more popular than so many things that we decided to make a follow-up blog to show that abortion is common, safe, and probably more popular than your favorite fall thing!

If you know carafem, you know we love all things abortion related. It’s what we do. But we’re not alone — abortion rights are more popular than you might think! Not only will 1 in 4 people who can get pregnant have an abortion in their lifetime, but across the country, the vast majority of people believe abortion care should be legal and accessible.

How popular is abortion?

According to a Gallup poll, 85% of Americans believe abortion should be legal in certain or any circumstances. When Roe V. Wade was overturned last year, protests erupted in an overwhelming public outcry of support for safe, legal, and accessible abortion, alongside resounding approval at the voting booth for legal abortion.

carafem is a provider of high quality, compassionate abortion care, both in person and through telehealth, so we’re a little biased when it comes to knowing how amazing access to abortion is. We’ve provided abortion care to tens of thousands of people, and know that each and every person was making the best decision they could for themselves and their families, and we will support that decision every time. People have been making thoughtful decisions about abortion care for centuries, and will continue to do so for centuries to come.

Here Are 8 things Abortion is More Popular Than

With such a high percentage of people believing abortion care should be legal and accessible, we wanted to put into perspective just how popular the right to abortion really is by compiling a list of what abortion has a higher approval rating than!

#1: Pumpkin Spice Lattes – 54%

It’s that time of year again when the first few hints of fall are welcomed with the world-famous Pumpkin Spice Latte, affectionately nicknamed the PSL. While it’s sometimes a controversial coffee choice, Pumpkin Spice Lattes are in full demand right now. This festive and seasonal drink is enjoyed by millions of people every year, but it’s still not more popular than abortion!

#2: The Office – 81%

With such memorable characters and quotable lines, The Office is one of the most highly-watched television series, and yet abortion has a slightly higher approval rating than The Office’s Rotten Tomatoes score. However, we know all the characters would support you through an abortion in their own unique way. Pam would be by your side during an At Home Abortion, Michael would drive you to a clinic for an in-office abortion, and we bet even Angela would offer some faith-based resources to support you throughout your abortion.

#3: McDonald’s – 58%

In addition to tasty menu items, McDonald’s has been popularized for its convenient food options and many locations that are open 24/7. Like McDonald’s, carafem has an Online Abortion Care option called Immediate Evaluation that is available day and night — only with a higher approval rating. While carafem doesn’t offer happy meals, we do provide special care items to all our clients, whether they receive abortion care in-person at one of our health centers, or through Online Abortion Care.

#4: Every Presidential Candidate for 2024

No surprises here — presidential elections are incredibly divisive in the United States. However, abortion is popular and supported across party lines, with a higher approval rating than any prospective presidential candidate. Currently, no presidential candidate has a polling rating above 46%, significantly lower than abortion’s 85%. Regardless of political affiliation, the majority of Americans support reproductive and abortion care, which is more than we can say for our future president (yikes).

#5: Apple pie – 79%

Have you ever heard of the saying “as American as Apple pie?” It turns out that in America, abortion is more popular than apple pie by about 6%! This fall season, whether you want apple, pumpkin, or pecan pie, carafem will always support your choice in pie and in pregnancy.

#6: Football – 66%

Whether you’re tuning into the Superbowl to watch the halftime show, the commercials, or even the game itself, football has a lower approval rating than abortion. Abortion has existed far longer than football and is far more popular! carafem will always have your back and will always be on your team.

#7: Netflix– 73%

Netflix might be one of the most popular streaming platforms, but it still isn’t anywhere near as popular as abortion. carafem has published reflections on abortion in pop-culture and media, when TV shows and Movies got real about people making the best reproductive decisions for their lives and their families. From Dirty Dancing to Jane The Virgin, these examples of abortion can be viewed on Netflix or other streaming platforms.

#8: Beyoncé AND Taylor Swift – 52% and 56%

Two music icons who just wrapped up their historic tours, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift are some of the most popular artists of their generation. While abortion has a higher approval rating than both Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, we know they would both support anyone in their life who was seeking abortion care. Beyoncé has spoken out about her reproductive history and the impact of having miscarriages, while Taylor Swift publicly condemned the Supreme Court overturning federal abortion protections. We’re glad to have these amazing women alongside the fight to protect reproductive rights, and their songs will absolutely be on all of our pro-abortion playlists!

Abortion is and always will be a fundamental human right.

The bottom line is that abortion is both wildly common and has an incredibly high rate of public support. Even if approval ratings for legal abortion weren’t as overwhelmingly high as they are, carafem would still fight to provide the best possible abortion care to all who want and need it. Abortion is and always will be a fundamental human right, and carafem will always be proud to be among the 85% of people who support access to legal and safe abortion, and we’re honored to be a provider of compassionate, respectful, quality abortion care.

Need abortion care now? Schedule an appointment online or in a carafem health center now. We often have same-day or next-day appointments available.

carafem’s 2023 Annual Report https://carafem.org/2023-annual-report/ Thu, 17 Aug 2023 16:45:40 +0000 https://carafem.org/?p=13332

As we reflect on the challenges of the past year — from the overturning of Roe v. Wade to an attack on the most commonly used method of abortion provision, mifepristone, we know these threats are based in politics, not science. We are reminded of the vital role carafem plays as a nimble, innovative, and trusted abortion provider in the United States. Read more about our progress and plans for the future here.

In the last year, people across 14 states lost access to abortion care in their communities entirely, and many others face new and harsh restrictions that make it nearly impossible to obtain this critical health care service. In response, carafem expanded our presence from 12 to 17 states and we’re seeing a growing number of people traveling across state lines to quickly access abortion in our health centers and via telehealth. carafem has become the largest non-profit provider of trusted telehealth abortion services in the U.S., ensuring that individuals have options to access care remotely, 24 hours a day and seven days per week. We have successfully balanced in-person and at-home care at scale, offering comprehensive options to meet the diverse needs of our clients.

Drawing upon global best practices and our commitment to innovation, carafem actively worked towards expanding access to medication abortion. Understanding the potential threat of a ban on mifepristone, we paved the way for the seamless provision of misoprostol alone, thereby securing ongoing access to safe and legal abortion options with medication. This proactive approach aligns with our unwavering dedication to maintaining and improving access to reproductive healthcare services in the face of ever-changing legal landscapes.

Looking ahead, we recognize carafem’s role in safeguarding and enhancing access to abortion care is more critical than ever before. As an organization, we are committed to serving as a reliable resource for accurate and readily available information. We strive to provide healthcare that is compassionate, affordable, trusted, and timely, while maintaining our respectful approach that honors the unique needs and experiences of every individual. By empowering our clients with accurate and easy to understand information, we aim to accompany them through the abortion journey with strength and compassion.

Despite the challenges we faced, carafem has emerged as a resilient provider, always putting the best interests of our clients at the center of everything we do. We reduced our prices, broadened our service delivery area, streamlined our processes, and gained the trust of tens of thousands of clients who needed our services during one of the most difficult times in the history of the U.S. for reproductive health care — and we are not slowing down. In the coming year, we are determined to expand our reach into additional states, breaking new ground and ensuring that individuals in need have access to the quality care they deserve.

On behalf of carafem, we extend our deepest gratitude to our dedicated team, generous donors, and passionate volunteers. Your unwavering support has been instrumental in driving our success and helping us fulfill our mission. Together, we will continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.

Is my period late or am I pregnant? https://carafem.org/period-late-or-pregnant/ Wed, 26 Jul 2023 16:33:11 +0000 https://carafem.org/?p=13210

Chances are, if you have periods, you’ve probably had the stomach-dropping realization that your period is late, along with a whole range of emotions, from fear to anxiety to uncertainty to excitement! Don’t worry though — carafem has your back.

Am I pregnant or am I overthinking?

We’ve compiled this guide to help you figure out if your period is just late or if you might actually be pregnant, including signs you might not be pregnant (whew). And if you are pregnant and don’t want to be, as a provider of compassionate abortion care, carafem has got you covered there too. The earlier you know you’re pregnant, the earlier you can consider your options and receive the high-quality care you deserve — whether that’s abortion care or care for continuing your pregnancy.

Step 1: When did your last period start?

First off, it’s important to identify when your last menstrual period started. Everybody approaches their period differently — some people are methodical trackers so they know exactly when to expect their period, and other folks just get their period when they get it and it’s a bit of a surprise each time. Regardless of whether you’re best friends with your period-tracking app or not, there are a few ways to know whether you might be pregnant.

Tricks to help remember your last period.

If you track your menstrual cycle, great! This step should be easy. If not, try and remember if there were any events or special occasions around when you last had your period. Was it around a holiday or a special event where you remember not wanting to wear white pants? Or maybe you texted your partner asking them to pick up pads, tampons, or some ice cream from the store. While knowing the exact date your last period started is the most helpful info, estimating a date that is close can help you recognize when something might be wrong.

Find a period tracking app with data privacy.

If you don’t already track your periods, this might be a good time to start. As states increase abortion restrictions, the earlier you know you’re pregnant, the more abortion options you may have. You can track your period on your calendar at home or by using an app. If you are tracking your period online, we recommend using caution with what apps or websites you use, especially if you live in a state where abortion is criminalized. Check out this article for period tracking apps, ranked by data privacy.

Step 2: When should you expect your next period?

Once you’ve narrowed down when your last period began, you can figure out when you should expect your next period. Most people have about a 28-day menstrual cycle, so your next period should start approximately 28 days after your last one began. If you should already have your period by now, try not to worry just yet!

Common reasons for a late period.

There are plenty of reasons that your period might be late that absolutely do not include pregnancy. Stress, fluctuating weight, change in exercise, and even some forms of contraception can all cause your period to be late without meaning that you’re pregnant. If you’ve been through any of these changes but know you have had sexual contact that could have put you at risk for pregnancy, it’s probably wise to still move to the next step. Being anxious about a late period can be really stressful. Taking a test when you are concerned is one of the best ways to either get answers and relax, or to begin to gather more information to make a plan.

Step 3: Take a pregnancy test

How soon can you find out if you are pregnant?

We recommend taking a pregnancy test as soon as it makes sense. Many home pregnancy tests can determine if you are pregnant as early as 10 –14 days after unprotected sex. A urine pregnancy test performed 21 days or more after having unprotected sex should provide definitive results.

Are expensive pregnancy tests better?

Some people like to test more often for peace of mind, others delay taking pregnancy tests if they find it stressful. It helps to know your cycle so you recognize when your period might be late and any dates you had sex, especially if it was sex without reliable contraception. This can help you time your pregnancy testing for when it is most beneficial. Want a pro tip? Just about all pregnancy tests are the same, so whether you’re getting your test from a dollar store, a high-end pharmacy, or your doctor’s office, you should receive the same result.

Now what?

Step 4: Negative test

If your result is negative, and it’s been more than 21 days since you’ve had sex, you can sit back and wait for your period! We still recommend repeating a pregnancy test if no period comes, if you are uncertain about the dates you had sex, or if you are uncertain if your sexual contact was protected. Sometimes light spotting can be seen within the first few weeks of a pregnancy, so if your period comes, but isn’t normal, another pregnancy test is a good idea.

Step 5: Positive test and your pregnancy options

But what about if your pregnancy test is positive? If you’re unsure of what your options are or if you don’t know if you want to proceed with an abortion or not, check out this free pregnancy options workbook, which has exercises designed to help you think through all your options and help you decide what is best for you.

Additionally, All Options is an organization that has a talk-line where you can speak directly with non-judgmental support staff to help counsel you on your pregnancy options.

Step 6: Seeking abortion care if you want

If your pregnancy test was positive, and you don’t want to be pregnant, carafem is here for you. We have a pregnancy calculator on our website that can help you find out how far into your pregnancy you might be, which may impact your abortion options.

Pregnancy length is measured by the date your last period started, not by the date you think you may have gotten pregnant. So start counting from the first day of your last period if you want to know how much time you may have to think about your options.

Compassionate abortion care in-person and online.

carafem offers in-person abortion care with pills or with an in-office abortion procedure in three states. We also offer online abortion care and mailing of abortion pills in 16 states, including video appointments with a provider or appointment-free online evaluations in many states. You get to choose the option that feels right for you!

If abortion is restricted in your state, we can try to help you with options for financial and travel assistance to a nearby state if you want to receive care from us. Can’t get an abortion with carafem? No problem — resources like Abortion Finder will show you more abortion providers that may fit your unique needs.

Regardless of whether your period is late, you are actually pregnant, or you are just concerned you could be, carafem is here to offer you the high-quality, trusted information and sexual and reproductive health care you deserve.

One Year Anniversary of Dobbs Decision https://carafem.org/dobbs-anniversary/ Fri, 23 Jun 2023 21:01:36 +0000 https://carafem.org/?p=12979

One year ago today, the Supreme Court decimated abortion access with its decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization court case that eliminated federal protections for abortion. While this past year has been devastating, it has also grounded our community in a collective fight for abortion access and increased awareness of revolutionary abortion options like telehealth abortion care.

As carafem reflects on the anniversary of Dobbs v. Jackson, we cannot help but feel the weight of the impact it has had on abortion access in the United States, especially for the 1 in 3 women that lost access to care in their home state. Throughout the past year, carafem has been working hard to increase access with online and in-center care, and is now serving 17 states.

The bottom line is this: Some people are working hard to ban abortions, but we’re working harder to provide them. Donate now to help us continue the fight.

Despite the challenges of the past year, carafem strives to provide the best possible abortion experience, specialized to each person’s needs. We are offering increased abortion options at a lower price point ($199-249 for online care), all while providing compassionate support throughout the whole process. In the wake of the Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court decision, more people are learning about different abortion options, including the availability and effectiveness of medication abortion.

Telehealth Abortion Care is Important for Abortion Access

Telehealth abortion care has become increasingly important for abortion access, as it allows people to receive abortion care in the comfort and privacy of their own homes. carafem has offered online abortion care since 2019, but most recently, began offering Immediate Evaluations, allowing people to access care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. By expanding the range of abortion options available, carafem is meeting people where they’re at and enabling people to choose the abortion experience that’s best for them.

But while the state of abortion care is dire, carafem remains more committed than ever to providing abortion care to those who need it and fighting to ensure that they can access it. We believe that everyone has the right to make their own decisions about their body and their life, without interference from politicians or anti-abortion activists.

The past year has been particularly difficult for abortion providers and seekers across the country, as the Dobbs v. Jackson ruling has emboldened anti-abortion extremists. Attacks on abortion, like the medication Mifepristone, and a wave of new state restrictions have intensified,  resulting in a significant reduction in abortion services and even permanent closures of clinics that have served their communities for decades.

One client’s review of their appointment with carafem highlighted the importance of abortion access, now more than ever:

In the wake of today’s political climate, it has been extremely hard to seek accommodations for abortions. But I am so glad I was able to find a clinic as trustworthy, confidential and supportive as carafem. carafem was my saving grace and they were so kind throughout my entire process… The doctor was also extremely sweet and patient with me. Everyone I spoke to explained the procedure very thoroughly to me and always made sure I had all my questions answered. I left feeling confident in my knowledge (as I chose the medical route) to complete the steps at home… Thank you so much, carafem, for helping me make this very difficult decision less scary and for having such amazing staff.

But carafem also needs your support — we cannot do this work alone. The past year has shown us just how vital the support of our community and donors is, and we are forever grateful for it. Your donations make it possible for us to continue providing abortion care to those who need it.

Queer and Trans Justice is Reproductive Justice https://carafem.org/queer-trans-reproductive-justice/ Wed, 14 Jun 2023 21:46:43 +0000 https://carafem.org/?p=12953

Happy Pride Month! This month, carafem isn’t just slapping a rainbow on all things and calling it a day. We wanted to take a deeper dive into queer and trans justice so we can understand the true roots of the movement, where it is today, and ultimately serve this community better.

Some folks may think, “That’s weird. Obviously, an abortion provider is only providing care to heterosexual, cis-gendered women.” But this is a common misconception. People of many genders and sexualities have abortions and carafem proudly welcomes queer and trans people to our brick and mortar health centers and to use our online care options. carafem aims to provide the most gender-affirming care possible and commits to using people’s correct names and pronouns.

Let’s get back to the history. Did you know Black and Latinx trans women started the movement with protests resisting police brutality? These origins remind us that all of our futures and our liberation are inherently linked. The fight for LGBTQIA2S+1 people is interconnected with abortion rights. Reproductive justice is queer justice and trans justice is abortion justice.

Reproductive justice asserts “the right to have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and healthy environments.” This framework extends to and beyond racial justice, immigration justice, disability justice, gender justice, environmental justice, economic justice, and queer and trans justice. carafem believes all people are deserving of compassionate, high-quality, affirming sexual and reproductive health care.

Queer and Trans people are beautiful and deserve to live in a world where they can unapologetically be their true selves, live authentically, and have their needs met. carafem celebrates the resilience and beauty of queer and trans people. And yet we’re still grieving and outraged by the relentless assault of queerphobic and transphobic hate crimes, legislation, and violent attacks that have been steadily rising.

These targeted attacks on bodily autonomy, healthcare, and our futures are designed to endanger those who have historically been the most exploited and marginalized. As providers of abortion care, carafem believes every person is the expert of their own lives, should be able to decide their futures, and be their true selves – free from oppression.

Queer and trans folks have always existed and will always exist, much like how people have always and will always have abortions. We will always advocate for a world where all people can enjoy their rights fully. For the world with laws and policies that protect everyone’s dignity.  Our lives and our love are proof that queer and trans people, like abortion, aren’t going anywhere.

Are you or a friend looking for compassionate, convenient abortion and reproductive care that is centered around your needs, easy to understand, and supportive? Give us a call at 1-855-SAY-CARA or schedule an appointment online.

carafem Pausing In-office Appointments in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee https://carafem.org/nashville-pause/ Thu, 01 Jun 2023 14:23:00 +0000 https://carafem.org/?p=12923

With heavy hearts, carafem has made the decision to pause in-office appointments in its Mount Juliet health center in Tennessee due to the state’s complete ban on abortion that has been in effect since August 25, 2022. If you are a carafem client and need assistance, such as a refill on your birth control prescription or access to medical records, please call us at 1-855-729-2272. carafem is still providing abortion care at our brick-and-mortar health centers in Georgia, Illinois, and Maryland, and offering online abortion care in 16 states.

It has been our absolute honor to have provided compassionate, high-quality abortion care in the Nashville area to thousands of people since carafem first opened our Mt. Juliet health center in 2019. We deeply value the meaningful relationships we have built with our patients, local community, abortion advocates and funds, and fellow reproductive health providers in the South. As we pause in-office services in Tennessee, we wanted to take the time to reflect on the last four years, celebrate our successes, and send our heartfelt love and gratitude to our staff, supporters, and allies.

Abortion care is a moral good — an act of community care and love — and a crucial part of health care that carafem is honored to provide. All people deserve to have full control over their sexual and reproductive freedom, including abortion access. We are outraged that anti-abortion extremists and politicians have enacted complete or near-total abortion bans in so many states, and our hearts break for our Tennessee community, who are left without access to legal abortion options in their state.

carafem is proud to have provided high-quality, compassionate abortion and reproductive health care in Tennessee since 2019

When carafem opened its Tennessee health center in February 2019, we were the only provider in the Nashville area offering abortion at the time, and we knew the need for abortion care was dire. Within one day, an entire month of appointments was completely filled, further signaling the immense need for better access to abortion care in this community. For years, people had been traveling long distances to our Atlanta, Georgia location looking for abortion care, and we were excited to improve abortion access for Tennesseans and all people in the South.

However, within 48 hours of opening, Mt. Juliet city commissioners held an emergency session to illegally block our ability to provide procedural abortions. We sued the city for this blatant anti-abortion attack on reproductive freedom, and after a lengthy legal battle, won the ability to offer surgical abortion. carafem is proud to have fought and won this success for abortion seekers in Tennessee, which allowed hundreds of people to decide and choose the best abortion option for them.

Our commitment to fighting for and providing abortion access and reproductive health care did not stop there. When Tennessee Governor Lee signed an unconstitutional six-week abortion ban into law in 2020, A federal judge temporarily blocked the ban, and we joined other abortion providers and the ACLU to file a lawsuit.

Finally, after the devastating Dobbs decision last June that overturned Roe v. Wade, carafem kept its doors open so we could continue providing sexual and reproductive health care to our community, despite a complete ban on abortion care that began on August 25, 2022. Since then, we have provided essential reproductive health care services like ultrasounds, contraception, and STI testing and treatment without offering abortion care.

Despite working to offer this vital reproductive health care, carafem knows the larger, nationwide abortion care crisis is where its attention must be focused, which is why the difficult decision has been made to pause in-office services at the Mt. Juliet center. carafem will continue providing high quality, compassionate abortion care at our brick-and-mortar health centers in Georgia, Illinois, and Maryland, and offering online abortion care in 16 states.

Testimonial Highlights for our Mt. Juliet Health Center

We are proud of the quality of service carafem was able to provide in Tennessee for the past  four years. Our clients consistently emphasized how grateful they were for the compassion and care they received from carafem staff. Here is a small example of the thousands of people who were impacted by the high-quality abortion care carafem brought to the community.

Happy Mother’s Day to the Parents Who Have Abortions https://carafem.org/mothers-day/ Thu, 11 May 2023 19:28:28 +0000 https://carafem.org/?p=12810

Most People Who Have Abortions Are Already Parents

Did you know that the majority of people who have abortions have already given birth to at least one child, meaning most people who have abortions are already parents (1)?

To all the current and future mothers and parents who have abortions: we see you and we love you — Happy Mother’s Day from your friends at carafem! We know that every person and every mother who has had an abortion made the best decision for their life, their future, and for their family.

carafem celebrates and honors the mothers and parents who provide love, support, guidance, and care for their children. Pregnancy, birth, and parenthood are sacred and serious commitments that people should be able to choose for themselves, without interference from anti-abortion politicians or extremists. It is a beautiful and brave adventure to become a mother and a parent, and it should be your choice to do so!

This Mother’s Day, carafem honors anyone who decides to have an abortion because they know it’s not the right time to be a parent, because they want to be able to support the children they already have as best as possible, and those who wanted to continue their pregnancies but couldn’t, for whatever reason. Like our friend and pro-abortion mama, Kristin shares in this beautiful tribute to her family and her decision to have an abortion. Thank you, to Kristin for sharing your moving and heartfelt story, and allowing us to share it with our audience!

All People Deserve Access to Comprehensive and Compassionate Abortion

Being able to choose if, how, and when you have children is a core tenet of reproductive justice, and all people deserve access to comprehensive and compassionate abortion care as a part of that. Reproductive justice is defined by SisterSong as the “human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities (2).”

carafem firmly believes families should be able to raise their children in a supportive and loving world, free from oppression and discrimination. Mothers and families deserve to live, love, and thrive without the devastating impacts of white supremacy, climate crisis, economic exploitation, ableism, and other forms of injustice and oppression. We envision a future of freedom and liberation for all families, and we’re celebrating this Mother’s Day with that goal in mind.

Supporting Mothers Means Supporting Abortion Access

Everyone deserves the freedom and ability to choose their own reproductive future and start a family exactly when they want to. Supporting mothers means supporting abortion access and the right to decide how to become a parent. If you want to help Mothers and parents who are making the best reproductive decisions for themselves and their families, you can donate to carafem here.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mothers and parents out there, including those who have had abortions. You are all loved and appreciated, and we thank you for everything you do.

The Supreme Court & Access to Mifepristone https://carafem.org/supreme-court-mifepristone/ Mon, 24 Apr 2023 21:12:50 +0000 https://carafem.org/?p=12133

When the news came in that the Supreme Court had stayed the 5th Circuit decision to restrict access to mifepristone, many of us at carafem breathed a sigh of relief. We put away our contingency plans and assured our team we were business as usual in all 18 states that we serve come Saturday morning. But we didn’t celebrate.

This completely baseless case to limit a safe, effective medication should not be part of the national conversation and should not have made it so high up in the courts. And we know the small number of vocal anti-choice extremists will continue to do everything in their power to limit access to safe and effective abortion care. To them we say, “Try and stop us.”

We are not afraid. We will not back down. We will keep our eyes on the horizon, providing respectful, thoughtful, and affordable abortion care to those who want it, no matter what. We will keep working to create a future where abortion is legal, free of stigma, and wildly convenient in all 50 states. We believe that everyone has the right to make their own decisions about their bodies and their futures, no matter their income, immigration status, physical ability, zip code, political views, or religious affiliation.

And we are not alone. We are proud to be part of the majority of people in the U.S. who support access to abortion care. We are not going to let the small minority of anti-choice extremists dictate our future. But we do need financial support to keep our momentum going.

By donating to carafem, you are siding with the fight for bodily freedom. Your contribution will help us expand our online abortion care services to more states, reach more people, and continue to provide compassionate care, even in the most turbulent of times.

Join us in this fight for a better future. Together, we can create a world where everyone has the freedom to make their own choices about their bodies and their lives.

P.S. Donations to FemHealth USA (doing business as carafem) are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

8 Things Abortion is More Popular Than https://carafem.org/abortion-is-popular/ Thu, 30 Mar 2023 17:20:08 +0000 https://carafem.org/?p=11885

#1: Putting Pineapple on Pizza – 44%

Starting on a lighter note, more people support legal abortion than they do adding pineapple on pizza! Abortion is as common and normal as pizza is, and abortion even has a higher rating than the most popular pizza toppings like pepperoni, sausage, and onions. Don’t worry, we won’t judge whatever pizza topping or reproductive health choices you decide are best for you.

#2: The Queen, Dolly Parton – 78%

We are astounded and appalled that Queen Dolly’s approval isn’t higher, but we’re also honored to be even more popular than the iconic singer, actress, and philanthropist. Dolly Parton is not only a supporter of LGBTQ+ rights and racial justice, but also helped improve childhood literacy in Appalachia and funded a COVID-19 vaccine. We’re in good company if legal abortion is more popular than Dolly!

#3: The TV Show Ted Lasso – 84%

This heartwarming Apple TV show starring Jason Sudeikis has taken the world by storm since its premiere in 2020. Even with a third season recently being released, abortion is still more popular than our favorite “football” coach. Regardless, we know Ted Lasso would absolutely be pro-abortion. He’d probably drive you to a clinic, help connect you to an abortion fund, and offer to support you throughout the process if you asked.

#4: The Entire Marvel Cinematic Universe – 84%

Across 22 movies that broke box-office records and reshaped modern cinema, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a higher overall rating of any film franchise — and abortion still has a higher approval rating than the MCU! If only Thanos could snap away restrictions on abortion care…

#5: Capitalism – 60%

A slight tone shift compared with the first few items on this list, but even systemic institutions like capitalism don’t have approval ratings as high as legal abortion does. Capitalism is continually decreasing in popularity (understandably so), and abortion is consistently and relentlessly more popular than ever before. Demand for safe and accessible abortion care isn’t going anywhere, even if capitalism does💸

#6: Congress – 18%

We know this is a very very low bar to beat, but in February of 2023, only a mere 18% of Americans approved of the United States Congress. Meaning approval ratings for abortion access were more than four times higher than our approval of the people running our country. Yikes. However, this means we have even more of a responsibility to fight for abortion access, and to put pressure on our representatives to protect abortion. Congressional representatives wish they could be a fraction as popular as abortion is.

#7: Every President… ever…

No surprises here, but historically, presidents have been pretty divisive in American history. In the nearly 80 years that presidential polling has existed, not a single president has reached a higher overall approval rating than 70.1%, significantly lower than abortion’s 85% approval rating.

#8: The Supreme Court – 40%

When you take away federal protections for basic human rights, it makes sense that your approval rating will plummet, right? That’s exactly what happened to the Supreme Court after the devastating Dobbs decision last June that overturned Roe v. Wade and nearly half a century of precedent.

Abortion With Misoprostol Alone: What You Need to Know https://carafem.org/misoprostol-alone/ Mon, 13 Feb 2023 20:07:01 +0000 https://carafem.org/?p=11560

You may know of the abortion pill as a combination of two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol, taken in sequence to safely end a pregnancy. In the U.S. these pills are most often used as a duo, and when used before 11 weeks of pregnancy and are up to 98% effective.

The first pill, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a hormone necessary for a pregnancy to continue to develop. The second pill, misoprostol, is typically taken as a set of four pills. It causes cramping and bleeding in order to empty the uterus (similar to a miscarriage). It is usually taken at home within 72 hours after taking the first pill.

What you may not know is that while the abortion medication process including mifepristone is the gold standard for abortion care, millions of people around the world successfully use misoprostol alone for an abortion when mifepristone may not be available.

Recommended by the World Health Organization as a safe and effective alternative to end a pregnancy, carafem has provided safe and successful abortion care with misoprostol alone to thousands of people since 2020 with a success rate averaging 95% or better.

Here’s a few top questions we’ve been asked about taking misoprostol alone to cause an abortion at home:

Is abortion with misoprostol alone available in the United States?

Yes, for years, abortion providers in the US have prescribed misoprostol alone as one option for abortion care.

Where can I get misoprostol alone abortion care?

carafem has provided misoprostol alone for abortion care as a reliable option since the year 2020 and has served thousands of satisfied clients. If you think you may be pregnant and don’t want to be, click here to make an appointment online or at a carafem health center.

When can I take misoprostol alone for abortion care?

carafem provides misoprostol alone abortion care up to 11 weeks from your last period date.

How much does misoprostol alone abortion cost?

A video visit, 24/7 support, medication, and shipping costs $249. In center care costs between $450-475, depending on the carafem health center location.

What is the process for taking misoprostol alone for abortion care like?

When using misoprostol alone for an abortion, three doses of the medication are recommended for the greatest effectiveness. Each dose consists of 4 200 mcg misoprostol pills, which are taken every three hours. When you choose carafem for your abortion care, you’ll also have the option to receive 24/7 text support and reminders of how and when to take the medication from Cara, our virtual assistant. Cara will always answer any and all of your questions with the back up of licenced carafem staff as needed.

No matter the questions you have, carafem is here for you 24×7 and will be with you every step of the way. From the moment you first contact us, through the abortion process, and until you have a negative pregnancy test, carafem is just a click or a call away.

The Next 50 Years of Abortion Care in America https://carafem.org/the-next-50-years/ Fri, 20 Jan 2023 19:48:06 +0000 https://carafem.org/?p=10673

January 22, 2023 marks what would have been the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and the establishment of federal protections for abortion across the US. But now access to abortion varies across states and trigger bans have eliminated that right altogether in some parts of the Midwest and South. This means 20 million women have lost access to legal abortions. While these changes mark a devastating moment in our nation’s history, we know that making abortion illegal does nothing to stop the need for safe, accessible abortion care. Pregnant people will still seek abortions, no matter where they live. We also know, as a nation, we can do better.

carafem remains committed to meeting the needs of people seeking abortion care and will go even further to explore every legal avenue necessary to ensure people have access to abortion, where and when they need it — no matter their income, zip code, religious beliefs, physical ability, or color of skin. But that is no longer enough. The inequities and inadequacies in the way abortion care has been provided in our country need to change. Now is the time.

While this isn’t where we thought we’d be at the 50th anniversary of Roe, we do want to paint a picture of what the next 50 years of abortion care in America could look like, and how carafem will help usher in the next era.

As people in Kansas showed us in their recent state referendum, no matter your political affiliation, an overwhelming majority of Americans support access to legal abortion care across our country.  This is not a political issue, it is an issue of the heart and mind. It will take a diverse group of allies working together on legislative, judicial, and political strategies to regain federal protections for abortion across our country, and it may take several decades. We believe this is not only possible but inevitable.

While legislative avenues are pursued, carafem is working hard on proactive strategies to help people get the abortions they need and want today. Over the next 50 years, carafem has a clear vision for the future of abortion care in the US. We predict that today’s political interference will actually serve to advance massive improvements in abortion care that will be accelerated by this tragic moment in time:

  • Faster: carafem is working to make same-day availability or immediate evaluation a reality in all states we serve. This will help to eliminate unnecessary waiting and be much more responsive to people seeking abortion care.
  • Less Expensive: carafem recently lowered the cost of medically supported at-home abortion care to average less than $200. We also accept Medicaid and private insurance for abortion care in many states and partner with local and national abortion fund groups to bring our clients the lowest cost possible. We believe in the future more abortion-supportive states will make use of state funds to pay for care for low-income people who need it. Medicaid coverage for abortion care will be the new litmus test for states that truly support access to abortion. This will eventually lead to Federal Access to funding for abortion through Medicaid.
  • Broadly Understood: From the moment someone realizes they may be pregnant, we envision all people knowing exactly what their options are without doing extensive research. By creating engaging content on networks like TikTok and Instagram, carafem is working to make information about abortion care easier to understand, more accurate, and dare we say fun! In the future, we hope finding an available abortion appointment will be as simple as finding an available hotel room in the areas where people live and work.
  • More Convenient: We believe in giving clients the option to choose the way that they prefer to seek abortion care.  From visiting their own private doctor to seeing an abortion care specialist for an abortion procedure, or having a video consultation or telephone call at a home in their pajamas and having pills sent to their door. All of these things are starting to become available now. carafem is leading the way.
  • More Equitable: Today, some online care feels out of reach for many. carafem is working to create low-tech ways of accessing online care, such as doing a consultation over a phone call or via private text messaging in 90+ different languages. Whether in a rural community far from a physician’s office or in the urban neighborhoods of big cities, people deserve the ability to seek abortion care, in their own communities, and in a way that is respectful of their preferences, values, and socioeconomic conditions.
  • Stigma-free: Around the world, people have different views on abortion care and as it shifts in each part of the globe, carafem strives to bring an unapologetic, positive voice to the conversation, chipping away at negative perceptions along the way. As more and more people are able to find their own voice, we expect the combined positive action of so many will move abortion from being a quiet but urgent necessity to a basic healthcare freedom. When abortion can be provided in a way that fully meets the needs of the person seeking care, we start to see people become more engaged in assuring the same experience is available for the people they love, no matter where they live.

We can’t build a better future without financial support from people like you. To make abortion care more accessible at a crucial time in our nation’s history, we invite you to make a donation now.

9 Gifts for the Abortion Baddie in Your Life https://carafem.org/abortion-baddie-gifts/ Mon, 12 Dec 2022 19:46:29 +0000 https://carafem.org/?p=10189

After a year of fighting for abortion rights, we’re using the holidays to celebrate our collective resistance, resilience, and to take time for restoration and healing. While we can’t escape capitalism (yet), we can use the holidays to show our support for issue areas we’re passionate about, like reproductive justice and abortion access!

As your friendly neighborhood abortion provider, the carafem team has put together a gift guide for your abortion badasses and repro besties — or for yourself. This year, ditch the hanger inspired gifts and gendered language that excludes trans people. This holiday season we’re sharing a few of our favorite radically inclusive reproductive justice inspired gifts!

1. Pro-Abortion Art

This artwork by Micah Bazant would be a beautiful way to show your support for people who have had abortions. The phrase, “Everyone Loves Someone Who Had an Abortion,” comes from abortion storyteller, activist, and We Testify founder, Renee Bracey Sherman. As an added bonus, the profits from sales will benefit another independent abortion provider, Partners in Abortion Care.

Want more pro-abortion artwork options? Check out the Liberal Jane store for art and accessories by Caitlin Blunnie, a queer reproductive justice artivist.

2. Funding Abortion is Hot Girl Shit Fanny Pack

This fanny pack is perfect for all your sexual and reproductive health needs, like carrying around condoms, birth control, and abortion pills! Being a hot girl is a state of mind and a way of life, and funding abortions is absolutely doing hot girl shit. But don’t just take it from us, take it from the Hot Girl herself — Megan Thee Stallion is unapologetically pro-choice, saying, “My Body, My Mothaf*cking Choice.” Plus, this fanny pack is sold directly from an abortion fund, so you know your purchase will help finance someone’s abortion. We know that’s right🔥

Want another option, or just another fanny pack? The National Network of Abortion Funds has a Fund Abortion Build Power holographic, iridescent fanny pack and this is the last chance to get it! Sadly, the fanny pack is being discontinued so grab one while you still can.

Hot Girl Shit Fanny Pack, The Reproductive Freedom Fund of New Hampshire, $24

3. Glittering Abortion Accessories: Fund Abortion hair pin

Our top favs are:

6. Abortion Jewelry saying Fuck Dobbs

With these jewelry pieces, you’ll be destigmatizing abortion in style. The Fuck Dobbs necklace in 14k gold is both stunning and educational. The Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization Supreme Court decision this summer overturned Roe v. Wade and federal protections for abortion access. That makes this necklace the perfect Fuck Dobbs and Fuck SCOTUS statement piece! Or you could go for other cute jewelry pieces from Shout Your Abortion, like an Abortion Necklace or Mife & Miso Earrings.

Fuck Dobbs Necklace, Shout Your Abortion, $40

7. Feminist Porn and Sex Toys

Part of being pro-abortion and reproductive justice is encouraging pleasure, fun sexual exploration, and paying sex workers and for your porn! This holiday season, consider buying a fun sex toy or some ethical, feminist porn to really show your appreciation for that special someone.

You could buy a subscription from your favorite Only Fans creator, or subscribe to a feminist porn website like the very NSFW Bellesa PlusDipsea Audio Erotica, or CHEEX, which pair sexual education with pleasure.

One toy we’re been reaching for lately is the Bellesa Air Vibe with that “O”-so-good dual clit suction and g-spot vibrator. Or any other toy from the Bellesa Boutique!

We’re also happy to share a 50% off code at Adam & Eve. Just use “CARAFEM” at checkout for 50% off of your festive fun!
