Birth Control Implants

Implants are a form of birth control that keeps you protected up to 3 years without having to worry about any daily routine. It’s a great option for people looking for high effective, simple contraception.

The birth control implant, Nexplanon, is a small rod (only 4cm) that is inserted just under your skin into your upper arm, so when you leave the health center, you have long acting, effective birth control. Oh and it’s so small it’s barely visible.

How does the birth control implant work?

The Nexplanon implant is a small, thin rod that is smaller than a matchstick. It is inserted under the skin of your arm by one of our providers. The implant continuously releases the progestin hormone to keep the eggs from being released from your ovaries. Once inserted, the birth control implant will work to thicken the mucus on your cervix to stop sperm from reaching the eggs.

The biggest benefit of this form of birth control method is that it can last 3 years after it is inserted. This makes it incredibly convenient and simple for preventing unplanned pregnancy. It is also completely reversible, so when you are ready to get pregnant, all you have to do is have it removed.

How effective is the birth control implant?

The Nexplanon implant is 99.95% effective in preventing pregnancy. It is a long-term method of contraception, so you will not have to worry about a daily pill routine, refilling prescriptions or scheduling appointments for new shots. Because of this, the implant is one of the most effective ways to prevent pregnancy available today.

What are the side effects of the birth control implant?

As with all medications, the birth control implant can have side effects. For the most part, negative side effects go away within 2-3 months after you begin using the implant. Most commonly, implant clients see changes in their period which result in lighter or shorter periods. Sometimes periods completely stop while using the implant.

Some clients have experienced breast pain, nausea, or headaches after getting the implant. You can also be temporarily sore on your arm where the device was inserted.

Lastly, as with other hormone-based birth control methods there is a chance you might experience depression, acne, weight gain, cramping or breast pain. If any of these symptoms become severe you should contact your medical provider immediately.
