Black Lives Matter, now and always

Black Lives Matter.

George Floyd’s life mattered.
Breonna Taylor’s life mattered.
Tony McDade’s life mattered.
Ahmaud Arbery’s life mattered.

From George Floyd to Eric Garner to Michael Brown to Tamir Rice to Emmett Till, white supremacy and anti-Black racism has killed countless Black people in America. We mourn every Black life stolen. We are outraged that these murders continue and that police brutality remains a threat to Black people in America.

We also acknowledge the Black women whose names are often unheard: Breonna Taylor, Atatiana Jefferson, Pamela Turner, Korryn Gaines, Sandra Bland, and more. We say their names and uplift their stories, understanding the misogyny and anti-Black racism they faced.

We mourn the life of Tony McDade, a Black Trans man, and resist the anti-Black racism and transphobia he endured, and all of the Black LGBTQ+ individuals who resisted against the intersection of racism, transphobia, homophobia, and queerphobia.

carafem is dedicated to helping to build a future where every person has the power to decide their reproductive future, which includes existing in this world without the threat of violence. The reproductive health field has long been entrenched with racism and misogyny that has harmed, sterilized, and killed Black women. We are committed to ensuring we do not perpetuate this legacy—and will continue working with our health care providers, midwives, doctors, and staff to educate ourselves and combat our implicit biases.

We stand with all those who demand a better future—one free from racism and violence. We envision a future where every person can live and raise their families how and when they choose. carafem will continue to offer abortion care that is respectful, compassionate, and non-judgmental to all people. We are aware Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) midwives and healers helped build the foundation for abortion care in America and remain passionate about providing care despite being thwarted by racism, sexism, and classism. We will continue to uplift the voices of those most directly impacted and those on the front lines resisting these systems of oppression and commit to prioritizing work within carafem to help dismantle systemic racism.

Black Lives Matter, now and always.
